Britain leads the world in offering a comprehensive and diverse range of professional qualifications covering a wide range of academic, technical and vocational disciplines. An individual’s professional qualification speaks of specialist knowledge, expertise and professional networks. Obtaining a professional qualification can be seen as an addition to undergraduate and graduate qualifications or indeed as an alternative, which can often be undertaken in a flexible learning format whilst at University or in employment. The principal function of Qualifying Professional Associations is to examine and qualify persons who wish to become practitioners in the field with which they are concerned. Membership is divided in grades, usually classified as ‘corporate’ and ‘non-corporate’. Non-corporate members are those not yet admitted to full membership, mainly students; they are divided from corporate membership by barriers of age and levels of responsibility and experience. The principal requirement for admission for membership is the knowledge and ability to pass the association’s examinations.
In the UK, a Chartered professional association is one that has received the Royal Charter from Her Majesty the Queen at the Privy Council. Chartered qualifications are prestigious and well respected all over the world. Charters are granted to selected organisations which serve the public good, in recognition of their pre-eminence, stability and permanence.
